If you need to heal out loud, don’t let anyone stop you. You do not owe anyone your silence.

In 2021 I was strangled, sexually assaulted, stalked, and sexually abused by a trauma informed, prominent individual. In 2019, 6 months before the pandemic, I moved across the country with my two kids and our pets to a place we’ve never been, and we didn’t know anyone from there. We had moved to escape poverty, stalking, and domestic violence. I enrolled my kids into extracurricular activities, and got to be friendly with some of the parents. Because of my professional background, some parents said I should meet one of the parents who was a big wig in the same field as I. They told me he was really nice and would be a good way to get a foot in the door. I tried to get to know him, but he seemed either too busy, or not interested, so I left it alone. He then started to aggressively pursue me during the pandemic while we were all in isolation…6 months after I moved there. I was lonely, scared, and poor. Suddenly, he started to flirt with me online, telling me what a breath of fresh air I was, telling me how amazing I was, offering to buy me and my kids groceries, and hinting at job opportunities. He was laying it on so thick that I started to see through it and I pulled back, and at one point unfriended him on Facebook. A couple months later I caught him walking passed my house while I was on a walk. I told him I lived there, and he told me that he already knew that. That night he sent me a friend request, and somehow I convinced myself that I was being too hard on him and that he deserved the benefit of the doubt, and honestly, I started to crave the attention, and the prospect of having a friend, especially a friend who seemed genuinely interested in helping me. He then became very hot and cold with me throughout 2020. He would lavish me with attention through text, dm, email, and social media, and then suddenly go radio silent. I would unfriend and block him, move on, and then he would either show up where I was, or get ahold of me through other channels. Finally, by 2021, after we were both vaccinated we made plans for me to go to his house, have margaritas, and sex. When we were in his kitchen making margaritas, he poured it a bunch of it down my throat (playfully and and at that point, with my consent. He put the thermos down, lunged at me, physically assaulting me, and then putting me in a chokehold. I thought I was going to die, and then I learned what people mean when they say that their life flashed before their eyes. I don’t know if the physical assault lasted seconds or minutes, but he abruptly stopped assaulting me, and then pinned me against the wall and started kissing me and telling me that “I light his fire.” By then, I was literally drunk, in shock, dazed, and confused. He then stopped kissing me and asked if I wanted to go upstairs, or watch tv. I said “go upstairs”. I was scared, and at that point, I didn’t know what he was going to do next, and I just wanted to get out of there safely, so I just went upstairs with him. When we got upstairs, he ripped out a handful of my hair. When we went back downstairs, he said, “I want to show you something that means a lot to me.” It was an award that he had received from a domestic violence coalition for his work on the reauthorization of the violence against women act. He then laughed and said, “but I like to choke and slap women, but it’s all consensual, right?” He also told me that he did this work so he didn’t feel like such a piece of shit. He took me home, and the next day, my daughter pointed out that I had bruises all over me, and a bite mark on my back. I think I was still in shock because, I didn’t really notice anything until she pointed it out, and even then, it didn’t fully register. He texted me a picture of him on vacation with a margarita. He said that it was the second best margarita that he had in his life. I told him that I didn’t think we should have contact anymore because I was afraid that he was going to hurt me. He then sent me money through PayPal with a note that said “thank you for being a friend.” I was in desperate need of money, so I decided to keep talking to him. I got really sick with an upper respiratory infection several days after the assault. He came back from vacation and brought me soup, and food for my kids from a Chinese Restaurant. He started being very kind again and telling me that he had feelings for me, and I began to doubt myself, and for some reason, I suddenly thought that I was in love with him. About a month later he picked me up and took me back to his house. All I know is I blacked out, and he woke me up in the morning and took me home. I don’t remember anything else from that night. That day, I texted him that I felt like a truck hit me, and that I felt like something bad happened to me and I didn’t know why. The month after that, he ghosted me. Then the month after that he came to my place and we started to have consensual sex, but it turned into another assault and he brutally sodomized me with my own toy. I went back to blocking and unblocking him, and I think I had a psychotic break or Stockholm Syndrome or something after the first assault. He sent me money a couple more times, and got me into a summer policy institute online with the prospect of helping me get a good job and opportunities to meet and network with people. We went back and forth over text, phone, email, and social media, but I never left my house besides going down to a neighborhood bar down the street. I was always in my room alone, and I became a recluse and started to become catatonic. I also had a terrible time trying to speak, it hurt to speak, like there was a fist in my throat. 6 months later, I became a client at a sexual assault help center. It was helping me a lot, and after awhile, I thought I was ready to look for work. I was blacklisted. People treated me weird at job interviews and said some weird out-of-pocket things, like dog whistles. I gave up, and just started delivering groceries. When I told my advocate in November that I was ready to file a police report against him (by then I had been a client for around 9 months). Suddenly I was getting a bunch of desirable job offers and interviews. I told my advocate that I changed my mind about reporting because I was afraid it would affect my career. I got a job as coordinator for an anti-trafficking program, but immediately my new colleagues were treating me weirdly and telling me stories of local clients and their cases which were almost identical to what happened to me, but the stories all ended up with them saying that nobody believed them, or that other people had stuff on the victims that would be humiliating to them. They would say a lot of other weird things that were like dog whistles. I began to feel unsafe and I told my advocate that I changed my mind again and I wanted to report him. A day later, my assailant’s new girlfriend/colleague (who is also very prominent and influential asked to have a meeting with me and my boss. I sensed that I was going to be ambushed, so in a panic, I disclosed the assaults to my new boss, and she assured me that this woman was very professional and private and she would not do that. When I went to the meeting room, his girlfriend told me that she would be recording the conversation. She implied to my boss that I was stalking and harassing her and that she has warned the community about me. I had never met, or attempted to contact this woman in any way, and I had no feelings towards her that were either positive or negative. When my boss asked her for context, the woman said that she could not say because there was an ongoing investigation on me, and that my boss would find out more as time went by. She said that she received a call in November (when I first told my advocate that I wanted to report) and was told that I was a threat to her safety and well-being, and that was all she could say for now. I then suspected that someone at the sexual assault help center had tipped them off that I was going to the police…both times. I found out that many of my colleagues including my boss were friends with her, and some of them informed me that she was texting people to get information on me, like if I had a Facebook profile, my agenda for the day, who I was meeting with, where I was going, etc. I began to feel so unsafe that I resigned less than 2 months after I started working there. However, I also forwarded a bunch of emails from my work that included these details about the harassment. My former boss sent me an email accusing me of “hacking into their computer system and impersonating an employee of the organization and that she would have me prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I ignored her email. I ended my relationship with my therapist and advocate from the sexual assault help center, and asked if they had been leaking information about me. Both my therapist and advocate denied breaching my confidentiality. The Executive Director also denied it. I went back into isolation for two more years, and got a new therapist. When I was ready to go back to work in 2025, I found that I had been totally blacklisted, and that this woman had gone all over the community telling people that I was stalking her, and that she had a restraining order against me. Neither of which were true. I began to publicly speak out about everything to try to defend myself. In the spring of 2025 I was sent a cease and desist letter from an attorney friend of theirs. I still kept speaking out to anyone in the community who would listen. In March of 2026, I was served with a n emergency personal safety order against stalking and harassment that she had gotten with the help of the sexual assault help center. I never did attempt to contact her even after all the things she had done. In her affidavit she claims that in November of 2023, the executive director of the sexual assault help center called her with a so-called duty to warn and said that I had made a threat against the woman, which was completely untrue. I was supposed to have a hearing within 10 days, and I was relieved that I could go into the courtroom and share my side of the story. I found out that she had a friendly relationship with the magistrate who granted her order in the middle of the night. The case was handed over to another magistrate who was also connected with them. I have never had a hearing. The 10 day order is still in effect and her attorney has filed 7 continuances over the past 5 or 6 months, and they have all been granted. I have never been in trouble with the law, there are no police reports filed against me, there was never an investigation about me, I have never had an altercation with this woman, unless you count when she came into my work, but even then I remained composed and professional. I have never threatened her. The betrayal by the sexual assault help center made me feel like I was being assaulted all over again. This woman has been stalking and harassing me for 3 years. I attempted to take my life 2 years ago, and she obtained that information about me and told everyone, I received anonymous mail about my new husband, and in her affidavit she describes how she has had people take pictures of me, that she has people looking at my social media and reporting back to her, people have pretended to want to become my friend only to find out they are friends with her, that she has talked to law enforcement about me, her friend in the prosecutor’s office, “her lawyer friend who sent me the cease and desist and said there was investigation about me in the cease and desist now works for the prosecutor’s office as an assistant prosecutor, she has had people message me and tell me that a detective wants to talk to me, etc. etc. This has been so painful to be treated like a criminal, being smeared and disbelieved, and betrayed by the very people who claim to believe survivors and are a resource to victims. I feel like trash. I feel like I don’t matter. I’m scared to leave my house without my husband, I dare not confide in anyone for fear that they are a plant. I feel totally silenced, isolated, and unsafe. I need a survivor support group online that I can attend so that I can maybe heal. Everything I say and do seems to get back to her. I’ve developed so many health problems over the last few years, and I can never sleep, concentrate, and I can barely function at times. I feel like I have lost myself, like I am a shell of who I once was. I tried to move on and heal, but they just won’t allow that to happen. I feel like someone who is on house arrest. There are so many more instances of the stalking and harassment that I have endured, but it is just too much to write. I just want to be believed. I want to be heard. I want to be validated. I want to be supported and advocated for, but aside from my husband and kids, I am all alone. I have support from my friends back home across the country, but it doesn’t feel like enough for me, even though I am grateful. I just want my life back.

Grounding activity

Find a comfortable place to sit. Gently close your eyes and take a couple of deep breaths - in through your nose (count to 3), out through your mouth (count of 3). Now open your eyes and look around you. Name the following out loud:

5 – things you can see (you can look within the room and out of the window)

4 – things you can feel (what is in front of you that you can touch?)

3 – things you can hear

2 – things you can smell

1 – thing you like about yourself.

Take a deep breath to end.

From where you are sitting, look around for things that have a texture or are nice or interesting to look at.

Hold an object in your hand and bring your full focus to it. Look at where shadows fall on parts of it or maybe where there are shapes that form within the object. Feel how heavy or light it is in your hand and what the surface texture feels like under your fingers (This can also be done with a pet if you have one).

Take a deep breath to end.

Ask yourself the following questions and answer them out loud:

1\. Where am I?

2\. What day of the week is today?

3\. What is today’s date?

4\. What is the current month?

5\. What is the current year?

6\. How old am I?

7\. What season is it?

Take a deep breath to end.

Put your right hand palm down on your left shoulder. Put your left hand palm down on your right shoulder. Choose a sentence that will strengthen you. For example: “I am powerful.” Say the sentence out loud first and pat your right hand on your left shoulder, then your left hand on your right shoulder.

Alternate the patting. Do ten pats altogether, five on each side, each time repeating your sentences aloud.

Take a deep breath to end.

Cross your arms in front of you and draw them towards your chest. With your right hand, hold your left upper arm. With your left hand, hold your right upper arm. Squeeze gently, and pull your arms inwards. Hold the squeeze for a little while, finding the right amount of squeeze for you in this moment. Hold the tension and release. Then squeeze for a little while again and release. Stay like that for a moment.

Take a deep breath to end.
